BIOGRAPHY

Né en 1994 à Lomé, Foli Kossi Gérard TETE, alias Tesprit, est un artiste autodidacte.

Tesprit nous invite dans l’univers contrasté des Dzimakplao, les enfants de rues du Togo et nous permet d’appréhender la précarité et la vulnérabilité, mais aussi l’enjouement et l’optimisme omniprésent dans le quotidien de ces enfants.

L’artiste travaille avec des tongs usées, récupérées dans les décharges de Lomé, chacune d’elle renfermant une histoire unique, emplie de persévérance et de courage.

Ces épaisses mais légères couches de semelles de tongs assemblées sur la toile, représentent des poses et actions tirées des réalités des ruelles de Lomé et nous projettent dans les histoires et les parcours de vie des Dzimakplao.

Simplement immortalisés dans leur quotidien, ces personnages sans visage sont tels des portraits anonymes qui révèlent la condition difficile d’enfants dans ce contexte actuel particulier qu’est notre époque.

Volontairement colorées et lumineuses, ses toiles laissent entrevoir de la gaieté et de l’espoir.

Le travail de Tesprit est une invite à plus de compassion, un appel à la bienveillance et l’entraide. Un espoir en l’homme.

TESPRIT, vit et travaille à Lomé

TESPRIT highlights the world of Dzimakplao - uneducated children - in Mina, their mother tongue. By sculpting thongs (commonly known as fags), essential accessories in African habits, he addresses the essential question of the condition of street children. Born in 1994 in Lomé, Foli kossi Gerard TETE, is self-taught, when he paints and sculpts, he is full of a creative spirit; "The spirit of TETE", hence its name TESPRIT.

His first personal exhibitions "Dzimakplao" took place in 2021 at Onomo hotel (Togo) in partnership with the French Institute of Lomé and at the Soview Gallery (Ghana). An extension of his work will be presented at the Goethe Institute Togo with “20 unknown stories”. He was also invited to the 2022 edition of the Gnanamaya Festival of Bobo Dioulasso.

TESPRIT's artistic approach is innovative, committed and ecological. His most important material, the sandal, he collects from the rubbish and landfills, or often he meets the Dzimakplao. He rummages through this rubbish, to find poignant stories, filled with perseverance and often sad ambitions, which each of his sandals tell.
